The journey continues…

Category : Getting Started

Ok, so now that I’ve gone ahead and bastardized this site with gratuitous Capitalism (thanks for the first few orders, already, btw!), it’s time to continue the FHWW journey.

I’m going to be traveling west, so while I’m out there, I decided to sign up for a few MeetUps that can help catalyze the journey from 16 hour a DAY mono-entrepreneur to 4 hour a week parallel entrepreneur. That requires radically changing my time management and approaching inefficiencies through outsourcing.

In my next post, I’ll take things as the book suggests. Starting with D for definition. Come along. Let me know where I’ve got it wrong.

Moichendize! Moichendize!

Category : merchandise

Say the above with a Joizy accent and you know what I’m talkin about. I’ve got goods that I’m sure you’ll love. In particular, a nice line of apparel that plays off the theme of getting more from your time.

Some goodies:

Find more goodies on the DFHW Gear Page. (Note that the prices are not showing up properly. Click to get the right one.)
Purchase and be proud! Show off your time mastery. Buy a T-Shirt as a New Year’s Resolution. Become an NR in the NY! Let me know your thoughts about the merchandise, and happy to keep on producing as long as there’s demand.

So, where have I been? Upgrading, that’s where!

Category : Uncategorized

So, getting a blog started is certainly a bit more work than signing up and just going for it.

Well, it CAN be that simple if you’re blogging just as a past time, but if you want your blog to return value for your time investment, you have to put a bit more into it. Since we’re all about the money-return on time, that’s where I have been.

First, the original blog was hosted on wordpress.com’s servers. While this greatly simplified the install and management tasks, the big downside is that the wordpress.com hosted servers don’t allow you to generate revenue from your blog. Since that’s one of the things I do want from my blog, I needed to move my site to a hosted provider.

After spending a short amount of time picking the right provider, I downloaded the WordPress software and installed it on the host. The I spent a day configuring it to behave like the site I had hosted on wordpress.com. Themes. Widgets. Pages. Importing. Exporting. You know the drill. I should have outsourced that. But glad I learned how to do it.

The money-making part

Next, the revenue part. Having been in the industry a while, I know that there are a few things you can do to generate blog-driven revenue. Google Ads is one (signed up, waiting for approval). Next, I have had some ideas for merchandise and gear related to this blog that I want to sell. The next post will detail all about that. After that, set up the FeedBurner configuration for the newsfeed, get Google Stats set up, and assorted to dos.

Yes, that took way too much time, but I’m now set to make this blog a success. I look forward to carrying you all with me on this journey!

Distraction… it’s like Crack.

Day 1: FHWW Diary

I did get something new accomplished today: got this blog started. However, pulling myself away from the realities of the business work week is proving tough.

I set myself a goal for today: spend only FOUR hours on the business today, and spend the other four working to expand the new aspects of my businesses.

Yet, there it is. Email. Ping. I have to respond. It’s urgent. Now I’m distracted.
Someone’s skyping me. Maybe I should just shut it off. But crap, there’s a fire. I have to put it out. Damn.

And then there’s the lure of inefficiency. Why be efficient when I can just check my del.icio.us book marks, make a call, do an errand.

Shit. My existing “inefficient” work week is like Crack. It’s proving a hard habit to kick.

What I need is some serious cold turkey medicine. Give me the withdrawal fever. I’m ready. I just need to kick this inefficiency habit.

HELP!

Diving into the Shallow End

Category : Getting Started

Wow, so I’m finally starting. Just like many of you, I’m diving into the Shallow End, as it were. As they say, the first step is the hardest, and the hardest part of beginning is just starting. What does that mean? That means that I’m going to completely reorganize my existence so that I can realize the promise of the “New Rich (NR)” and work the Four Hour Work Week

What is the Four Hour Work Week

If you’re reading this blog, odds are you already know what I’m talking about. But if I have the dubious pleasure of introducing you to this topic, let me give you the Cliffs-notes of the Cliffs-notes version of the story. The Four Hour Work Week is a book written by Tim Ferris, an insatiable time managing entrepreneur who espouses the idea that the 40 hour work week is unnecesssary in today’s rat race. Why work 40 inefficient hours when 4 efficient ones will do? Why bother wasting your time with low-margin, high-time expense activities like reading email and meeting with inefficient co-workers when you can focus on the task at hand and as a result make MORE money in LESS time, giving you more time to do…. MORE.

The idea seems somewhat incredulous, especially when you think that you can spend 10% of the time now for a 50% or greater increase in income. While we can talk endlessly about whether or not this makes sense, I decided to do the logical thing. TRY IT. In the next few months, I’m going to shift from a 60+ hour work week to a 4 hour work day to a 4 hour work week, and in the process, greatly increase my overall revenue. Can this be done? Who knows. Let’s try. And I’ll make the mistakes for you. In the process, help guide me in the right direction. A true experiment in community collaboration… with benefits.

Who am I?
First, I’m not going to tell you my name. Why? Because I am already fully and gainfully employed and I don’t want to Cross the Streams. I’m not an employee… I am a serial entrepreneur. I am running a successful small business that is doing in excess of $1 Million a year. So, why should I bother with a 4 hour work week? Because I have no life.

To be more precise, I have no time. I am finding that the more time I spend, the more that the returns are diminishing. Yes, the company is doing 7 figures, but I’m not taking all that home! I’m splitting that with my partners and subcontractors, not to mention overhead and expenses. To keep the company running, I have to put in even more effort and time, but without seeing the multiple return for the multiple time investment.

Why am I doing this?

So, I want to find a better way. Not to make more money (that is a nice side-effect). I want to find a better way to manage my time. If all I accomplish is making the SAME amount in less time, that’s a win. If I can achieve MORE with my time, and still have a life, that’s an even better win. If I can make money while I sleep, that’s a real win. So, the story here is about time management and the financial return of time. If the equation of time in to value out can be optimized, then I’m all game.

Besides, I have other businesses I want to run, other ideas I want to flourish. And without time management, I have to be a SERIAL entrepreneur when in reality I want to be a PARALLEL entrepreneur.

What’s the purpose of this blog?

The purpose of this blog is to drag you along on my journey. Have you help me correct mistakes, suggest my stupidities, rant on how all this is vain or foolish or feeble, encourage me when things are going well, support me by forwarding the experiences here and traffic (and help me earn at least some modest income from the blog itself), and buy my funny FHWW merchandise (coming soon!).

But most of all, every experiment of value should have its results publicized, if the experiment is to have any worth. And since this experiment is an experiment in my life, I would be hard pressed not to say it’s of value.

Welcome!
